Curriculum Overviews

At TEMA we are extremely proud of the broad and balanced curriculum we offer to all of our students. We are committed to building on the skills our students have previously learned to ensure all students make rapid progress.

Our curriculum is designed to provide appropriate challenge to all students and foster an enjoyment of learning. Students also develop: their reading, writing, numeracy and communication skills; to be resilient, confident and to persevere; as well as how to work cooperatively with others.
Our curriculum is structured around a one week timetable with each day consisting of five one-hour lessons. Each school day begins with a tutorial session with every student having a personal tutor to provide academic and personal development support.

Key Stage 3

In Years 7, 8 and 9, we offer a wide range of courses alongside our core curriculum of English, Maths, Science and PE.

Years 7 and 8

All students study English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, RE, a modern foreign language (French or Spanish), Technology, Art, Performing Arts, Computer Science and PE.

Year 9

In Year 9 students continue with English, Maths, Science, PE, a language, Performing Arts, RE, Computer Science and PE; they are able to refine their curriculum offer by choosing to study either History or Geography and one subject out of Art/Technology. This is followed with further choices in Year 9 when students pick the subjects they want to study at Key Stage 4.

Key Stage 4

In Years 10 and 11, we offer a wide range of courses alongside our core curriculum of English, Maths, Science and PE.

There are a range of GCSE qualifications and other accredited courses to meet the needs of all our students and each course offered has a clear progression pathway to Post-16 education and employment. We place a strong emphasis on ensuring academic rigour with our curriculum; because of this, we are able to offer the majority of our students the opportunity to gain the English Baccalaureate (EBACC) qualification excluding our current Year 10 and 11.

All students study at English Language and Literature, Maths GCSE, at least two Science GCSEs and PE. Alongside this students have 3 option choices with all students having to study at least one other EBACC subject. Some students have to choose a language and a humanities subject, this is directed by their internally assessed progress within school. The subjects the school offers at Key Stage 4 are:

  • Languages: French and Spanish
  • Humanities: Geography and History
  • Expressive Arts: Photography, Art and Design and Performing Arts
  • Social Sciences: Psychology, Sociology and Childcare
  • Digital Technologies and Business: Travel and Tourism, Media Studies, Business Studies, Computer Science and Creative iMedia
  • Technologies: Hospitality and Catering, Food and Nutrition, Product Design and Textiles
